“Contain”最常見的解釋是「包含」、「容納」，例子：

1. This email contains a virus. DO not open it! (這電郵有病毒，別打開!)
2. The most commonly used tear gas contains the chemical agent 2- chlorobenzaldene malononitrile (CS).- The Independent (最常用的催淚彈含有化學物鄰-氯代苯亞甲基丙二腈。-《獨立報》)

所以「容器」的英文是“container” 。

第二個意思是「克制」、「遏制」或」「阻止」—— 報道山火的時候，提及火勢受控程度，例子：

The firemen are working all day to contain the fire. (消防員整日工作，控制火勢。)

很多時候也會以被動式表達：
The bushfire is 90% contained. (已撲熄90%山火。)

除了山火以外，情緒也可以用“contain”：

He was not able to contain himself when he was teased by the crowd. (遭群衆取笑，他無法控制自己的情緒。)
