《iET Facebook 英語學堂》 第19周 : Hand Down

繼反對東北發展計劃的13名示威者被判囚8-13個月，雙學三子昨天亦被改判囚6-8個月，事件引起社會廣泛爭議，判刑重或輕，市民心中有數。

「判決」的英文，相信很多人都想起“sentence”(可作名詞或動詞),但如果想說「判一個xx的判決」，説成“sentence a xx sentence”便太纍贅了。

今天iET教大家另一個易記、簡單又靈活的動詞片語 (phrasal verb) —— “Hand Down”，除了是「將一樣事物傳給後輩/繼承者」外，亦解作「正式或公開宣佈」，通常指判決。

另外，如果將“hand”變成眾數，亦可變成習語 (idiom)“hands down”，意思隨即不同，解「輕而易舉」、「毫無疑問」，相信 you can remember this week's iET English Feed hands down了！

例子:

The judges explained on Tuesday that “there was a need to hand down a deterrent sentence against those involved in the development project protest for the sake of social order”. （SCMP）
